Troopers say Dillon Dawson was shot to death Saturday in Clay County by his 79-year-old great uncle, Alfred Dawson. He allegedly shot the teen from a tree stand 125 yards away.
Investigators say it appears either the boy or his dog was mistaken for a coyote. They would not confirm earlier reports that Dillon, a freshman at Clay High School, was playing a prank on his elderly relative by pretending to be a coyote.
School officials announced the boy's death to the 600 students at Clay High School today. Counselors were at the school where an upbeat mood from the school's good showing in the State Basketball Tournament turned to sadness. A candlelight vigil is planned for six Tuesday night at the school.
Natural Resources Police have taken over the investigation that troopers say appears to be a tragic accident.
