Peggy Thompson is a dedicated recycler. She says news that the Slack Street Center is shutting down comes as an unpleasant surprise.
The Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority commissioned an engineering report to get an idea of the repairs needed to bring the processing center up to code.
Inspectors found a number of problems and said the building is unsafe. The price tag for needed repairs and renovations is one and a half million dollars.
That forced the board's hand. Members decided to close it in the interest of safety.
Without the center, Charleston, Dunbar, St. Albans and South Charleston...along with private citizens who drop off their items...are on their own.
Steenstra has already laid off 14 of the center's 24 employees. The remaining staffers will work to process and move the items already on site.
