Mason County Sheriff David Anthony had already resigned when he walked into a courtroom Tuesday afternoon to plead guilty or no contest to 4 criminal charges. The plea included his resignation, withdrawal from the sheriff's race, promise to never seek political office and the surrender of his certification as a police officer.
He had been jailed in November for firing a shot near his 13-year-old son at their rural home while two deputies watched the drunken gun play. He plead guilty to brandishing and firing a gun within 300 feet of dwelling for that.
Anthony plead no contest to fraudulent schemes and embezzlement for taking a Florida trip on the county money he repaid. All 4 were misdemeanors. He face up to three years and 100 days in jail, but no prison time.
The rest of the 42 count indictment was dropped in the deal that defused a tense courthouse mood. Commissioners could pick a new interim sheriff as early as Thursday,
