Collista

There's not much left in Collista. The small, unincorporated Johnson County community was hammered by the tornado that roared through here on Friday.
But as bad as this is...it could have been much, much worse.
Kelly McCarty's car was flipped upside down by the winds...but she stayed level-headed in the midst of danger. As the storm approached, Kelly's dad said it was time to move to a nearby underground basement. Before heading to safety, she checked on a neighbor who was huddled in an outbuilding with seven family members.
This empty space is where a mobile home used to sit...where a husband and wife had decided to remain and ride out the storm. But McCarty didn't think that was a good idea.
This is that mobile home. It's several hundred feet from where it used to sit...and nothing is left.
Collista was hit hard. The local church, destroyed...the piano thrown across the road into a parking lot. Homes demolished or heavily damaged. Yet...in the midst of this carnage there is faith and thankfulness that no one here was killed.
