"There was a big room through that door, through that door was our kitchen, and it was a full working kitchen, and it's gone now."
Bartender Tracy Shepard takes us on a tour of Nelson's Place along route 152 in Lavalette. What used to be the back is now a smoldering pile of rubble down the hill.
Shepard says, "It's pretty well a mess, as you can see."
Fire gutted the bar early Friday morning, leaving behind a close-knit group of friends to pick up the pieces. Shepard tells us, "It meant the world to us. We love each other. We love our bar. We support our bar. We're a family, and I don't know what we're going to do. I mean, it's sad. It's so sad."
The fire reportedly started in the back of the building, and is thought to be electrical. There are few remnants of a place that is near and dear to this community. Shepard says she feels, "Sadness. Finding stuff that meant something to all of us. Wondering where everybody's gonna go, whether everybody will stay close or not."
This bar has been open since the mid 19-40s, and has been in the Nelson family for about 25 years. The group says they'll do everything they can to rebuild. "Definitely, and we'll work side by side to do it. To put back what we've lost," says Shepard.
