State fire marshals say the fire that killed a woman late Thursday morning in Spencer was an accident. Spencer Police say smoke inhalation killed 34-year-old Sarah McAtee. The fire started in an upstairs bedroom.
The victim's husband , Michael McAtee was seriously injured while trying to rescue her from that blaze. He is in the Cabell-Huntington Hospital burn unit, but police say he is expected to recover.
A Roane County sheriff's deputy who also made an unsuccessful attempt to pull the victim from the burning home on Circle Avenue, but refused treatment after being driven back into the street by smoke and heat.
It took firefighters with air packs, two attempts to reach the body in the burning house.
A boy, 10, got out of the house uninjured. The couple's two other children were not home.
