Public health officials said more than 30 cases of pertussis have been reported in three counties.
In an advisory the Bureau of Public Health said it is investigating outbreaks in Berkeley, Hancock, and Morgan counties. Thirty-eight cases have been confirmed or are probable.
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious illness caused by bacteria. Its symptoms include short, intense coughing spells, followed by a gasp for air, which produces a "whoop" sound.
