You've heard the tips over and over again-what not to do around alternate heating sources like a space heater. Sadly, they still cause hundreds of deaths each year, and many probably could have been prevented. These days, nearly all new space heaters are equipped with extra safety features, like automatic shut off. Lowe's outdoor equipment specialist at the Huntington Mall Joe Brown says, "It just basically shuts the heater off if it falls over or someone knocks it over." If you're looking to just heat up one room, they can save you money if you pick the right one. Brown says, "You're looking for something that maybe has a thermostat, or something that has maybe two different heat settings, so that you're not running it at full power all the time." All of those safety features don't account for operator error. Huntington firefighter Lt. Jaymes Nelson says, "Just remember to keep articles of clothing, furniture, anything like that, at least 36 inches away from it." They come with instructions for a reason! Make sure you read them carefully and follow them to stay as safe as possible. Nelson says, "If they're electrical, don't overload the cords. Actually, don't use extension cords with it." If the cords are frayed, don't risk it! Brown says, "It's always better to upgrade. It's better to spend 20 dollars on a new heater than it is having to get a new house."
