A union soldier of the Civil War is being honored in Boone County. Not just through song, prayer, and old stories...but through a road that stretches ten miles in honor of his name and service for our country.
William Chapman "Chap" Cook left behind family who can't forget his legacy. William is the grandson of Floyd Cool who founded Cook Mountain in West Virginia.
After surviving the war, Cook later died and was buried on the mountain.
Dustin White is Cook's seven-time great grandson. He's followed his great grandfather's story for as long as he can remember. "The Cook side of my family has lived in these mountains before West Virginia became a state. And it's great to have this connection to these mountains," explains White.
And just in time for our Independence Day, Cook's fight for our country will be recognized by every person who travels the road. Remembering the ultimate sacrifice that Cook and all soldier make to maintain America's freedom.
"My family...we've never been rich people but we've always had a rich history, and a lot of people don't know about that history. And this is one way that we can restore part of that and at least know the name of William Chapman Cook," says White.
