The morning commute turned into a traffic nightmare for thousands of drivers headed into to Charleston from the West. It backed up past Cross Lanes from the I-64 bridge between Dunbar and South Charleston. Just before rush hour began, highway crews shifted eastbound traffic from the old bridge to the newly constructed span over the Kanawha River. Commuters apparently had trouble adjusting to the traffic pattern after a 20 minute stop in interstate traffic. Road marking were confusing at the point where drivers merged onto the new span. The traffic problems spread to surface roads clogged by drivers who got off the interstate or were unable to get on it.
