Drunk driving is a bad idea. Now a new solution is being proposed to help keep drunk drivers off the streets of Charleston.
C & H Taxi Company has proposed putting taxi stands on Capital Street to help people get home safe. “One of the biggest goals of this is to get drunk drivers off the road,” said C & H Taxi owner Jeb Corey. Bar patron Mark Rollings says the idea makes sense. “Yeah I think it is a good idea because if somebody is too drunk to drive they can just walk across the street and take a cab home,” said Rollings. The taxi stand would be between Kanawha Boulevard and Virginia Street from 6 pm to 6 am. Four cabs would be available for bar patrons when they leave. “If we do it right downtown on Capital Street where a majority of the bars are here in Charleston, you know people can almost look out the bar windows, see the cabs there when they are there,” says Corey. Mothers Against Drunk Driving Victim Advocate Margie Sadler says this is a great idea. “That is going to get you home safely, that is going to get you to where you are going safely. That is going to save a life,” said Sadler. According to the most recent stats on drinking and driving in 2008 160 people died in West Virginia due to drunk drivers. The city council will vote on the proposal at the next city council meeting. Jeb Corey says if approved he hopes to have the taxi stand set up by Halloween.
