Families in the town of Clendenin enjoyed a quiet summer afternoon on Friday.
But last night was a very different scene.
Police say 29 year old John Reed stabbed Melissa Taylor on Maywood Avenue, just across the street from The Hangout bar, where customers say Reed had been hanging out.
The bar manager, Faye Metheney says, customers said Reed wasn't acting odd. "They said he was acting like a normal person. They wouldn't realize he would do something like this."
Metheney says the alleged stabbing occurred in the parking lot and then the victim ran across the street and into the bar for help.
Metheney says, "The lady that was bartending, she was in first aid so she knew exactly what to do."
Police say Taylor was stabbed several times in the stomach, back, and neck, but some say this act of violence doesn't scare them.
Stephanie Keaton, who has children and lives just across the road, says, "It doesn't scare me at all. I think it was just a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting that led to the stabbing."
Clendenin Sergeant, John Jarmin, says, "It's just something that doesn't normally happen in a town like this, but with that said, there's no fear in coming into town."
Jarmin says people in the community have been quick to call when they think they have information that could help capture Reed.
"We've been receiving quite a few calls in regards to sightings of the vehicle, but so far we haven't been able to catch up with him. We still encourage the calls." says Jarmin.
Some aren't worried.
Keaton says, "We still walk around in town. We were out til 12 last night."
Others are staying a little on edge until Reed is found.
Metheney says, "You never know if he's going to come back. It's really scary."
Melissa Taylor has since been released from the hospital.
Reed is believed to be driving Taylor's yellow Chevy Cavalier with Melissa's name written on the windshield. The West Virginia license plate number is DJY-992.
