Justin Graham listens to a drug seminar at the Teays Valley Church of God with a different perspective than most in attendance.
"I'm facing second degree robbery and facing 5-18 years right now." says Graham.
Graham was high on Xanax and Oxycontin when he held up a fast food restaurant last October. The 28-year-old says he started using drugs when he went to Winfield High School.
Graham says, "The pressure to fit in drew me to that type of lifestyle. A big problem I've noticed in Putnam County Schools is with prescription drugs. It's really accessible."
Drug prevention experts and deputies say prescription drugs are on the rise throughout the county. That's why they're aiming this seminar toward parents and their young children.
Parent, Mandy Bohm, says, "We don't want to take these formative years for granted."
Pastor, Melissa Pratt, says, "When Officer Jordan set this display up (with various drug paraphenalia and weapons) and said everything had been confiscated from Putnam County schools, I was completely floored."
Some may think these children are too young to know the dangers of drugs, but Graham disagrees.
Graham says, "A lot of the people I knew that did drugs had kids in elementary schools and those kids know what's going on even if the parents think they don't."
Bohm says, "If you wait until junior high or high school you've waited too late."
Graham says, "It took getting arrested for me. If this hadn't happened I probably would have died form an overdose. Now that I have the Lord in my life that gives me a lot of hope."
Corporal Will Jordan says, unfortunately, prescription drugs aren't the only increase they've seen. They're also seeing more needles on school grounds.
Justin Graham has since joined the church but still faces sentencing this October.
