A teenager who admitted to murdering an elderly Charleston woman last summer learned his fate Wednesday.
Thomas Mallo, 15, will spend the next 40 years in prison for stabbing Phyllis Phares, 82, at least 35 times in her Frame Street home in June 2009. This was the maximum sentence the teenager could receive under his plea deal.
Mallo's attorney says the teenager grew up in a sexually, physically and emotionally abusive home, and he deserved another chance.
Five of Mallo's relatives have also plead guilty to several charges, including child neglect.
Four, including his mother and father, are still in jail.
Phares' daughter, Karen Morris says the family is pleased with the sentence and she hopes Mallo will spend the next 40 years thinking about the crime.
Mallo will be housed in a juvenile facility until he turns 18 when he will be moved to prison.
