State leaders passed a bill on the final day of the legislative session creating harsher penalties for drivers who fail to obey the warning signs of a school bus. Those violating the law will soon face up to a $500.00 fine and possible jail time.
New technology allows some schools to catch dangerous drivers in the act. Kanawha County has 60 school busses with cameras positioned underneath the stop sign to catch drivers blowing by the flashing lights when kids exit. Transportation Director George Beckett said, "We're so excited about these new cameras so we have legal documentation to use to make sure these violators are prosecuted properly."
A school safety study shows on average 29 children die each year after being hit getting on or off a school bus. It last happened in West Virginia in December 2007. Haven McCarthy was struck and killed getting off the school bus in Lincoln County. The new laws were named in her memory. McCarthy Grandmother, Linda said she plans to raise money to get more busses equipped with the cameras throughout the state.
