It's been two months since the devastating earthquake in Haiti, and the need for assistance is still great.
"It's sort of faded out of the news cycles here, but there is still a tremendous effort going on in the country, and I think that Americans over the years have always had a special place for the needs of Haiti." That's why a group of folks in Charleston boarded a plane headed for Haiti Friday morning. Doctors, nurses, social workers, and others are taking down medical supplies, clothes, diapers and toys. The Red Cross also donated about 100 personal care kits for the group of about 20 to take to victims. "The outpouring of individuals here in the community that want to help has been overwhelming," said Dr. Sale. He's an orthopedic surgeon in Charleston who has been on several work-related trips to Haiti. This will be his first since the January earthquake. He says he hopes to operate on and help as many people as possible. "We'll do the best we can!" Lorrie Lewis actually just returned from a trip to Haiti, where her group treated more than 1,600 patients. One of them, a 14-year-old boy covered in sores from head to toe. "By the end of the week, his sores were better, and he was high-fiving us. Initially, he was unable to walk into the clinic. By the end of the week, he was able to walk out of the clinic," said Lewis. It's one of the many reasons she's going back. "I think we made a small difference in some lives, and I think that's how you have to help Haiti, one person at a time," Lewis said.
