It's tough enough to make it to the state tournament. Only eight teams in each class qualify.
But when you throw in what many are calling the worst winter in memory, the job gets even harder.
Tucker County Head Basketball Coach Tom Gutshall says he had 50 inches of snow in his front yard this season, and Tucker County got hammered with a near-record snowfall of around 255 inches.
The Mountain Lions met Midland Trail in the first round of the Class Single A Boys' State Basketball Tournament. For both squads, Old Man Winter was as formidable a foe as any hoops team.
Combined, the Mountain Lions and Patriots had more than 40 games and practice sessions canceled because of heavy snows.
The coaches for both squads say overcoming so much off-the-court adversity makes this trip to Charleston even sweeter.
