Hometown Elementary is a normal school with hard working students and dedicated teachers, but thanks to a national contest, the students are now taking on adult roles.
"We're making a video documentary." says fifth grader, Caleb Hodges. "They had to apply for their positions," says fifth grade teacher, Malicy Black, "We have camera operators and interviewers, lighting people. It was like a real job." Hometown is one of ten schools in the nation, to receive the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts Center's "On Location: Spotlight Your Community" contest. Which means for 13 days media teachers from Washington D.C. will help them make a documentary about anything they want. "I think that's cool." says Hodges, "We're a small school we don't get to do much." Black says "A lot of them have said they want to do this forever and they wanted to pursue it after elementary school." The students are completely in charge of making the documentary about an Appalachian folk band. Fifth grader, Caleb Luikart says, "Right now we're just learning about our jobs and what to do. We've got like what you guys got. Camera crew and lighting." The students get to edit their story on a not so typical bus. It's actually an editing suite on wheels. Kennedy Center Media Teacher, Lorraine Black says, "They learn everything from storytelling to interviewing, to how to operate a camera and do editing. The students do it all themselves. They're catching on amazingly fast." The Kennedy Center will leave behind an iMac computer for the kids to complete their documentary. And in two months when everything is finished it will go on the Kennedy Center's website along with the other winners for everyone to see.
