A South Charleston man is behind bars after allegedly beating a sleeping man with a pipe and scalding him with hot coffee.

24-year-old Daniel Bass is charged with malicious wounding.

Deputies allege he broke Michael Gibson's shin with a metal pipe at a home in Alum Creek.

Gibson had a compound fracture and needed rods and screws inserted in his leg to hold his bones together after the attack.

He was also treated for minor burns. Bass allegedly told the victim that he was the reason his ex-girlfriend didn't like him anymore
