A bill implementing harsher penalties for people ignoring the stop signs and warning lights of a school bus passed the legislature today.
Haven's Law was one of 217 marking the end of the 2010 regular session. It stands in memory of Haven McCarthy the six year old girl was hit by a car at a bus stop and killed back 2007. The punishment will jump from 50 dollars to as much as a 500-dollar fine and come with some possible jail time.
The bill failed in 2009 and was met with some contention in committee this year. Now it is on the way to Governor Manchin for final approval. McCarthy's family said this day brings joy and peace.
