New statistics are out concerning West Virginia's unemployment rate.
According to the West Virginia Labor Department, the newest figures put the state's unemployment rate at 10.5 percent. In Cabell County the rate is lower than that average coming in just over 8.5 percent. But if anyone takes a drive downtown Huntington, chances are they will see a handful of hiring billboards. Cabell County Commissioner Nancy Cartmill says with Huntington being a college town, more people are holding out for a job that better suits their profession. "People that have a college degree don't want to work at McDonald's," she said. "I think they're trying to find something more comparable to their education level." But Cartmill says though the unemployment rate is high, it's better than most counties in the state. In fact, Cabell County is one of only four of the state's 55 counties that are under the states average. Kanawha County and Marion County are both around 8.5 percent and Putnam County is around eight percent. The lowest in the state fall in Clay County at 16.5 percent, Roane County at 17 percent and Calhoun County with over 21 percent.
