A Kanawha County couple is now facing some serious repairs after a high speed police chase ends right in front of their home.
Mansford and Wanda Hammonds have been on the phone with insurance companies all day. Both of their vehicles were crashed into and totaled; their two houses need repairs also. Eric Fields, 21, is charged with fleeing DUI, destruction of property and a few other counts. According to court document, Fields admitted to drinking prior to the start of the chase. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "I was in there sleeping, when all the sudden I heard a bunch of noise, then I heard a bunch of spewing. That's when I knew it was the gas." It was a rude awakening for Mansford Hammonds and his wife Wednesday morning. "Shakes you up, because the gas was flying. We had to start running, you know they were saying 'Get out!'," said Wanda Hammonds. It got even worse. "When I came out, everything was gone. The car, the truck and the front of both houses," said Wanda. Police say Eric Fields fled while officers tried to pull him over for driving on a suspended license. They started on West Washington Street, and Fields allegedly sped up to 80 mph during the 12-minute chase. He turned his lights off at one point, and ended up at the Hammonds' on Falcon Drive. Fields was taken into custody for a DUI, but the Hammonds say they wish it wouldn't have this far, especially for a suspended license. Wanda said, "They should know not to chase him out through here like that. Cause they know this is a narrow road and all these cars are parked through here." There's nothing they can change now, but they say it's still frustrating that Fields caused so much damage to their property. "When you work all your life, that's just the way life goes. You can't change it." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man is in custody Wednesday morning after a police chase in Charleston. Police say Eric Fields ran from police because of a suspended license. The chase that lasted for twelve minutes started on West Washington Street and ended on Falcon Drive. The man had his lights off and caused damage to several people's property then crashed into two cars and a couple of houses. Fields is charged with driving on a suspended license and D-U-I.
