Dewey Mann, 93, will be given a French medal next week in Washington D.C. for his service during World War II.
The Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur is the highest honor France can bestow upon a civilian.
Mann was captain of the 142nd infantry 36th Texas Division from 1943 to 1945.
He helped liberate France from Nazi Germany.
Mann says he does not know why after 50 years he is getting the honor, but he says he is grateful.
Mann will travel to D.C. Tuesday for the ceremony Wednesday at the French Embassy.
The American Flag at the Capitol will also be flown in his honor.
