Light snow is gradually winding down across the area early this afternoon. Many roads are turning just wet but still exercise caution if traveling, especially north of I-64 and in the West Virginia mountains.
With many areas seeing over an inch of rain Friday, the water logged roads and ground melted a lot the snow on impact, and with temperatures within a degree or two of freezing there has been quite a difference across the area in terms of snowfall amounts (see totals below). While some roads are mainly wet others are very slushy and slick so exercise caution if you're traveling. Speaking of water, numerous high water reports were received by us since last evening. Much of that has subsided but as of 11 AM Camp Virgil Tate is still blocked by high water and is inaccessible. The eastern mountains and part of southern Ohio have dealt with the brunt of this storm, with snowfall totals over 6 inches across much east-Central Ohio and well over a foot in parts of eastern West Virginia. Meanwhile parts of southern West Virginia and much of Kentucky south of I-64 have seen virtually no snow at all. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon in anticipation of the storm. "We are prepared as we can possibly [be] for something uncertain," Manchin said. "We don't have any idea might happen." With the disaster declaration, the state has activated extra resources to help the affected areas dig out and restore any power outages. Unlike last weekend's snow storm, this is a heavy, wet snow and is capable of bringing down trees and power lines. It also can cause extreme stress when shoveling. So take your time and take a break if necessary. As of Noon AEP is reporting around 3600 customers without power combined over Kanawha, Jackson, Roane and Clay counties. About 1500 customers are without power in Raleigh County area. Outages have increased in Ohio. Roughly 10000 customers are without power in Athens, Meigs and Washington counties. Most power is expected to be restored there by 7 pm Sunday. Here are the latest snowfall totals from the National Weather Service (as of 9am): In West Virginia: Alum Creek......1.5" Beckley......9.0" Charleston......2.0" Clarksburg......5.0" Grantsville......3.0" Hacker Valley......1.3" Huntington......1.5" Elkins......8.0" Oak Hill......1.5" Richwood......9.0" Snowshoe......23.0" Summersville......1.0" Webster Springs......1.3" In Ohio: Athens.......4.0" Jackson......3.1" In Kentucky: Grayson......1.0" Greenup......2.0"
