Students at John Adams Middle got a reality check in financial education Thursday morning.
West Virginia treasurer John Perdue talked to students about how to earn a salary, budget monthly bills, and shop for essentials.
The students got a chance to go around to pretend businesses at the school for a hands-on lesson in financial planning.
Treasurer Perdue says it's never too early for the next generation to start planning for the future. He says, "You can lose everything you have if you don't know what paying your bills on time is all about, why managing your money is really so important to do."
Seventh grade math teacher at JAMS Cecilia Jordan says, "It's never to early to start teaching them about finances. They're going to be making important decisions one day."
This is part of the treasurer's Networth program that recently earned the 2009
Excellence in Financial Literacy Education award nationally.
They've been to three schools since kicking off the program last month in Elkview.
