About ten minutes after the drug began flowing, Ohio executed a killer through the first U.S. lethal injection using a single drug Tuesday. That's a supposedly less painful method than previous executions that required three drugs.
Kenneth Biros was pronounced dead at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday. That's about 43 minutes after he entered the death house at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. He killed Tami Engrstom in 1991, chopped up her body and dumped the pieces in 2 states. The victim's family applauded when the warden announced he was dead.
Ohio changed from three drugs to a one-drug method after a failed attempt at putting a different inmate to death in September. Biros' lawyer complained it took 9 attempts to get the IV into his arm, but Terry Collins, the head of Ohio's prison system said it went well. Death happened much quicker than critics predicted. A pool reporter recounted Biros' last words; "I'm being paroled to heaven. I will spend all of my holidays with with my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Peace be with you. Amen."
