Pullman Square in Huntington was a little more crowded than usual Saturday. That's because celebrity chef Jamie Oliver hosted an event saying goodbye to the river city, ending a three month stay that has been filled with challenges.
During his stay, Oliver has been all over to different hospitals, schools and churches, teaching as many people as he can to eat healthy. "I have his cookbook with Jamie and had him autograph it," Leslie Maynard said. Maynard is one of those people who is grateful that Oliver came to Huntington, which was once named the unhealthiest metropolitan area in the country. She says his teachings will live on. "I think he's just trying to change the eating habits of our children," she said. "All the fast food they eat and all the weight problems. I think it's wonderful he was here and I hope he does it all over." "A lot of people don't like him here, but I really enjoyed having him here," Meaghan Bogacz said. The event even drew some big names. Showing their support for Oliver's project country music stars Rascal Flatts stopped by to let the people of Huntington know that everyone, everywhere, will soon know who they are. "Huntington, West Virginia's going to be on the map for starting something all across the US," lead singer, Gary LeVox, said. But people say they are drawn to Oliver's cause for more than the big names. They say they genuinely want to make a difference, something Oliver, himself, has taught first-hand. "He's done an awesome job here, and I'm going to be Jamie Oliver's biggest fan when he leaves," Bogacz said. Huntington Mayor, Kim Wolfe, presented Oliver with a key to the city, thanking him for all of his hard work during the past few months.
