Even though kill numbers are down little from last year, park officials are calling a special hunt to thin the herd at Stonewall Jackson Lake a success. A small group of hunters picked by lottery killed about 58 deer in three days. That's about a dozen less than last year's hunt. Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park wants to cut its 150 deer per square mile numbers back but not eliminate the animals that park visitors like to watch. Deer have caused thousands of dollars in damage to the park's landscaping and golf course.
