A 4th grader who saved his three small brothers from a carjacker on Charleston's West Side got some special recognition today.
Malik Youngblood halted a carjacking by grabbing the car keys out of the ignition when a man jumped into his mom's car outside a convenience store earlier this month. When he saw the man Youngblood said he thought "What is this man doing. He's crazy! " Youngblood's three small brothers were in the back seat The carjacker was forced to flee on foot and police immediately made an arrest.
Thursday at J-E Robbins school Youngblood was named a junior policeman as the county prosecutor tried to use his courage to convince youngsters not to adopt a "no snitch" mentality that has made city crime fighting a tough job. The 9-year-old knew why he was being honored. He said "because I did something good for my family." His mother proudly watched him get the small police badge.
School principal Henry Nearman said: "I think for his actions that evening he's definitely a role model not just for the kids but for a lot of adults. I think there's a lot of adults that may not have known what to do." Prosecutor Mark Plants agreed " Unbelievable. He's brave and courageous and most important quick thinking. " Others youngsters got a chance to meet with police and were urged to do the right thing if they see a crime
