Firefighters are setting fires in the Wayne National Forest. It's for a controversial one thousand acre controlled burn. The U.S. Forest Service is burning away dead wood built up over years. Some of it fell during ice storms. It could help fuel uncontrolled wildfires. They've burned about 3000 acres in the forest this year. Another reason for the burn is to give certain trees pushed out by Maple trees a chance to thrive in the forest. Some environmental groups tried to stop the burn. They argued fire is a poor forest management tool and might allow undesirable trees and plants to move into the area of the prescribed burn.
