$470,000,000.
That's the estimate of direct costs of substance abuse a year in West Virginia. Governor Manchin unveiled a comprehensive plan that would take five percent of that figure, or about 23 million dollars, and invest it in prevention, early intervention and recovery.
That money would support county, regional and state projects. It's the first time that all branches of government and other agencies will work together to fight the problem.
Governor Manchin says he knows it's a big issue to tackle, but he says we can't afford to let it go any further. He said, "There's not a person listening to us right now, nor a person I've ever been in an audience with, that hasn't been affected, either directly or indirectly, whether it's their family, extended family, or close friend, that they don't know that's affected their lives by illegal drug use. It's something we've got to win."
