This week Kanawha County school leaders will face a tough fight when they take a final vote on their school reorganization plan.
Roughly 75 parents against the idea formed a group called the Sissonville Community Awareness Team. Under the plan Bonham Elementary would close due to constant flooding problems and most of its students in kindergarten through fourth grade would go to Flinn next year. Sissonville Middle School would then become a fifth grade through eighth grade campus. Sissonville Elementary Parent, Aimee Carpenter said, " It's ten year old. Ten years old. It's not middle school. They've put together this plan to fast and I have concerns about the maturity level difference and possible bullying at the school." Longtime Kanawha County School Board Member, Pete Thaw said, " We are giving fifth grade it's own wing with it's own entrance. There are plenty of school across the state that are grades K through eight in one building with no problems. Flinn Parent debbie Hughes said, " We are concerned about the fifth grade but we have other concerns as well. Like heath and safety for kids here at Flinn. The parents want money designated to expanding Flinn and Sissonville Middle to instead go toward building a new elementary. Some members of the legislature are now supporting the parents. House Minority Leader, Tim Armstead and Kanawha County Delegate, Patrick Lane sent a letter to school leaders denouncing the consolidation plan and encouraging them to seek other options. The final hearing and vote on the Sissonville school shake up is scheduled from Tuesday at 6PM at Sissonville Middle School.
