"I've been watching the progress from afar and I'm very impressed with the people who have come together," Ryan Seacrest said. "The families, the kids, these are real people who are feeling the change and are empowered to do it."
He's not here as a host for American Idol. Instead, Seacrest is in Huntington as a producer for the upcoming Jamie Oliver Project.
"I saw what Jamie did in the UK and I was really impressed by it," Seacrest said. "I think it's a big issue in our country and I'm a big believer in each individual doing what they can to make a change and a difference."
The project, which showcases Huntington's eating habits, is scheduled to hit ABC's airwaves sometime early next year. The show comes after Huntington was given the title of being the unhealthiest metropolitan area in the country.
"This is a great place to start, being here in West Virginia allows these fantastic people to have a voice and be an example for the rest of the country," Seacrest said.
But some people, like Sherri Sowards, are afraid the show will only focus on the negative side of Huntington.
"We have educated people and we're doing something right," Sowards said. "People are wanting to come here not to focus on the negativity of [Oliver] coming in to insult us."
But Seacrest says that is not the intention of the show.
"We're not coming in to make fun of anybody or tell once slice of a story," he said. "We're coming in to really try and help."
