Just a little more than a dozen people showed up for Monday night's swine flu town hall meeting at Riverside High School. But Dr. Rahul Gupta says he thinks that means hard work to spread awareness about the virus is working.
"It tells me most folks are comfortable and are taking the precautions that they need to." says Gupta. Representatives from the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and Kanawha County Schools were on hand to answer questions and put rumors to rest. Joe Armstrong says in some ways he was disappointed in the meeting. "This is a very serious health issue. I thought there would be a better turnout." says Armstrong. But he was satisfied with the information from the panel. "He (Gupta) said thus far pediatric deaths are at 127 nationwide and we haven't even begun to reach peak season... Seasonal flu anyway." says Armstrong. Mike Huffman's whole family came to the meeting. "We all had concerns and we hear so many things. We wanted to hear from people who know what they're talking about." says Huffman. But even after all their questions, Huffman says the future is his family's biggest concern. "I'm still concerned the virus is getting to the point where it's out of hand and there needs to be more opportunity to get the vaccination." says Huffman. Two more town hall meetings are scheduled. Tuesday, November 3rd at Capital High School and Thursday November 5th at St. Albans High School.
