Fatal Accident Man in Wheelchair Hit, Killed by Semi-Truck; Driver Charged

A wheelchair bound, elderly man is killed after a semi-truck hits him while he was crossing the street, dragging his chair for nearly a mile.
The accident happened Monday morning in Kenova at the intersection of Route 60 and 14th Street. Police Chief Bob McComas tells Eyewitness News the truck driver was making a wide right-hand turn on green when he hit the man, who was crossing 14th street in the crosswalk.
McComas says 68-year-old Deris Scott died at the scene after being thrown from the chair.
The truck driver, who is 43-year-old William Joyce from South Carolina, kept driving along 14th Street toward the I-64 on ramp until another motorist stopped him. Joyce told investigators had no idea what had happened. Pieces of the motorized wheelchair could be seen along the path the truck took.
Chief McComas tells us the the West Virginia State Police have taken Joyce into custody. He is charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident involving death and misdemeanor negligent homicide.
