Man Crushed Worker Dies in Railroad Tunnel Accident. 160 Tons of Rock Falls.

A machine operator inside a railroad tunnel near Kermit has been crushed by falling rock.
The man was operating an excavator when the early Thursday morning accident occurred.
The man's identity has not been released. Norfolk Southern rail officials said he was an employee of Johnson Western Gunite Construction.
The Kermit Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the tunnel and dug out the victim about 2 hours later on the Wayne and Mingo county line.
OSHA said crews were conducting maintenance work inside the Norfolk Southern tunnel when the accident occurred. The railroad is expanding its tunnels to handle taller trains. The tunnel should be back in service about 9 Thursday night .
