Prissy may not look like a show horse today, but just the fact that she survived a grueling night in the mud makes her look beautiful in her owner's eyes.
"I think she's just a great animal. She's a little stiff but she's doing good." says owner Glen Lane. She wasn't doing so well Tuesday night, when heavy rain loosened dirt being dug around a sewage line. When Prissy stepped into the quicksand-like substance she began to sink. The more she struggled, the deeper she got. "When one's so in danger like that and they're so helpless you really can't do much." says Lane. There wasn't much Lane could do by himself, so he called neighbors and the fire department and they did all they could to keep the 25 year old walking horse calm. "We fashioned a re-breather mask and put oxygen through there and the horse was able to breathe." says Teays Valley Assistant Fire Chief, Steve Connolly, "We had several bottles of water and were constantly giving the horse water." But while the horse was fine, actually getting her out wasn't going so well. Minutes became hours without much progress. Eventually, the volunteers began to sink as well. That's when Home Depot stepped in. They donated more than 20 sheets of plywood to help provide solid ground. "They had to get it out of the mud and they couldn't do it without the plywood and they had to have it." says Home Depot department supervisor, Mark Jobe. Steve Connolly says, "We were able to get the front of the horse out and onto the plywood and you could just feel the life come back into the horse." "As soon as she got free she headed straight for the barn." says Lane, "The firefighters and neighbors are the real heroes." Excavators continued to pack the mud into the ground Wednesday to make it more solid. Lane says a temporary fence will keep any of his horses from trailing back into danger.
