Drivers Traveling the West Virginia Turnpike must pay a little more money.
Toll increases went into effect Saturday with a bit of Controversy. McDowell County Delegate Clif Moore led a demonstration in front of the Ghent toll plaza when the increase went into effect. He said, " We will do what we can legislatively and administratively to alleviate these tolls." Delegate Moore said he thinks the tolls are unfair to drivers in the southern half of the state and the increases may force local trucking companies out of business.
The rates went up from $1.25 to $2.00 for cars and trucks and from $4.25 to $6.75 for most large trucks like 18-wheelers. Turnpike officials said the hike was necessary to pay outstanding bonds and perform maintenance. The cost to Travel the West Virginia Turnpike Hans's gone up since the 1980's.
