"How are you going to feed your family? How are you going to pay your bills? How are you going to get it back? What are you going to do?"
These are just some of the questions that Tammy Reynolds thought of after becoming a victim of identity theft.
"It has to be the most scary financial thing we've ever been through," she said.
About 40 minutes after going out to lunch for her birthday, Reynolds got a call from her bank asking her if she'd recently made any large purchases. Thinking it was suspicious, she looked through her purse and realized that her wallet was missing and inside it were three credit cards and her driver's license.
"I had gone through this whole day of trying to get my birth certificate, I didn't have my driver's license and you have to have a birth certificate," she said. "I couldn't get money because I was in the hole...I was in the hole because someone stole my wallet. It was just this whole day of a mess."
Her bank account, which held over $1,300, had been wiped clean, including $500 at the KMart in South Point, Ohio, and $800 just down the road at Wal-Mart.
"I think there should be stricter laws," Reynolds said. "I think people and vendors should check ID's better."
Thankfully, Reynolds' bank has put every penny of what was stolen back into her account, and she says she'll now be taking more precautions to try and keep it from happening again.
