What would you rename the state?
When Eyewitness News asked, the answers were plentiful.
The Miners State
Heaven's Gate
The Green State.
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
Juliet pondered it over her Romeo.
Now more than 400 years after William Shakespeare penned that very question, three West Virginians are asking it again.
Some environmentalists say the mountains in the Mountain State are disappearing through surface mining.
They say our nickname no longer applies and want your input for another.
Nancy Bulla, Charleston, "I tend to be a tree hugger but I also appreciate our need for energy and our dependance on coal so I'm hoping there can be a compromise."
This isn't the first extreme measure taken by environmentalists.
They have held protests at mountain top removal sights, some were even arrested.
But is this contest the best way to get out a message?
Sue Pryce, Charleston, "I think it's just a little absurd really to even be discussing."
Many in the Kanawha Valley are concerned about protecting natural resources including our "mountain majesties", but they are a little reluctant to change.
Sue Pryce, "Why can't remain the Mountain State, that's much better."
Bill Peterson, "I think the Mountain State is appropriate for West Virginia and it's entirely silly to think of naming it anything else."
