Rachel Cantrell and 5 family members moved into the just opened FEMA temporary housing park in Mingo County on U-S 52 Friday. The trailer comes complete with furniture, bedding and kitchen gear. Many families lost almost everything they owned in the May 9th flood.
About a half-a-dozen of the 60 foot, 3 bedroom trailers are occupied by victims of the May flood. Work is moving rapidly to allow others to move into all 41 mobile homes for up to 18 months. Federal and state officials say temporary housing for southern West Virginia flood victims that once required months was set up quicker because of teamwork.
The State Housing Development Fund obtained the land used during 2004 flooding to give the latest victims a place to stay. Two sites in Mingo County will soon house 57 families hit by flooding in May. Another is planned at Lizard Creek in Wyoming County
