Flooding will continue along the Tug Fork River this afternoon into tonight. Along the Guyandotte the river has crested in Logan and Man earlier than previously anticipated. This means a reduced threat for flooding from the river in those areas and the Guyandotte will slowly fall below flood stage Man and Logan this afternoon. Upstream the river will rise around Branchland but it is now not expected to reach flood stage there. However, the Tug Fork continues to rise in parts of Mingo and Wayne Counties. In Williamson the river is expected to crest around 39 feet this afternoon. This crest is similar to one back in 2003. At Kermit the river will crest around 45 feet tonight, about 7 feet above flood stage. This is also similar to the level reached in 2003.
Heavy rain has dropped upwards of 4" of rain across portions of Logan and Mingo Counties, and has caused creeks and streams to back up and flood communities. One of the hardest hit areas is Gilbert in eastern Mingo, where numerous homes are damaged and mudslides and road closures have been reported.
