"I'd just like to say to the family I'm deeply sorry this happened," Darrell Cadie said. "It wasn't intentional, I hope she makes a full recovery."
Cadie says for the past month, he's been worried sick for the well being of Kelly Peet. "I'm more worried about her," he said. "My thing was I wanted to know if she was going to be alright." Cadie says where he lives coyotes are a big problem, and about a month ago, he thought he saw one running across a field near his home and because his dog was out, he says he grabbed his gun and fired one shot in the area to try and scare it away. "I got down here, I seen it coming across the edge of the field, so I racked a rack in the gun and aimed high so I wouldn't hit my truck," he said. But what he didn't know...it was a German Shepherd...three of them, all belonging to Peet who was taking scenic photographs in the same area. The 47-year-old was hit by Cadie's bullet, shattering her jaw. Cadie says it was all a "freak accident." "I wouldn't do that to somebody," he said. "I'm not that type of person." Peet's family say judging from the distance, which was about 200 yards, and the fact that Peet was lying on the ground, the shot was intentional, but Cadie says that's absolutely not true. "I basically fired a warning shot," he said. "I didn't have time to aim. I fired a quick round to scare it off. I had no idea that there was anybody down there...I couldn't see anybody." Cadie says after talking to deputies at the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, there are no charges that could be filed against him because officers believe the incident was an honest mistake.
