NEWMAN PLEADS GUILTYfrom Eyewitness News Online Victim Still Recovering

B.J. Berkhouse, Victim, "She says she accepts it but I don't think she thinks about it everyday."
For B.J. Berkhouse June 7, 2008 is day he can't forget. A drunk and high Melissa Newman was driving down Capitol Street in the early morning when she ran Berkhouse over with her car. He's upbeat but life will never be the same for Berkhouse. B.J. Berkhouse, "I think I'm alright. I just can't walk without a walker and I'm 31 so I can't do a lot." Family and friends say Berkhouse has come a long way since the accident, but he still has a long recovery ahead. Lindsay Bowler, Berkhouse's Girlfriend, "She can go living her life day to day just as she was before. B.J. was an innocent person and his life is changed forever." Newman maintains she doesn't remember anything about the accident, but by pleading guilty to driving under the influence and DUI causing injury, the Sissonville mother is accepting responsibility. John Mitchell, Jr., Newman's Attorney, "She has no recollection from the time she was leaving the Moose Lodge until she came down town and this horrible situation occurred." When Newman left the courtroom, she didn't even pause to speak with Berkhouse. He says a simple apology is something he is still waiting to hear. B.J. Berkhouse, "It wouldn't mean a whole lot at least I know she is thinking about it." Newman will be sentenced in June, until then she will remain free on bond. The most she could serve is three years behind bars.
