Truda Mendenhall lost her job at Fenton Glass three weeks ago.
She says the problems with the economy are pretty simple. Truda Mendenhall, Williamstown, W. Va., "We need our jobs, we need our American made products." Hundreds of workers and union leaders gathered at the State Capitol to get the word out about "buying American". The Turn America Around Rally is aimed at spending West Virginia's nearly $2 billion portion of the federal stimulus bill on nationally made goods thus putting local workers back on the job. Lou Delatore, Rally Organizer, "When the state receives the money, spend it on American products with American workers. Put our middle class back to work." West Virginia has been hit hard with job losses. Internationally owned Century Aluminum in Jackson County closed it's doors, sending more than 600 people to the unemployment lines. Robert Harvey was laid off, now he's looking for more work. Robert Harvey, Jackson County, W. Va., "They are going to spend this money, we want to spend here so we can keep our jobs here." Some money from the stimulus bill could be used to improve West Virginia's roads and bridges. Those projects would create jobs. Delatore says that won't fix the economy but it's a good start and one that should change the American way. Lou Delatore, "When the stimulus money is gone we still encourage everyone try and find and buy American."
