YOUTUBE ARRESTfrom Eyewitness News Online Video Shows Both Sides in Arrest
Reported by:
Videographer: Tim Rock Web Producer: Rudi Raynes Updated: February 18, 2009 11:22pm
Angela Hawk says she posted video of her husband being arrested on YouTube because she feels a terrible injustice has been committed.
Angela Hawk says, "I'm not trying to say my husband is perfect or that he did no worng. He had bad judgment. However, I think what took place there overrides." Hawk was arrested for DUI and driving with a license that had been revoked because of a prior DUI. But she says officers didn't properly do their job. "There are no lights and the police report is so misleading. The video officer says get off bike calmly. No motion to take his helmet off. My husband was trying to put the bike in neutral." says Angela Hawk. According to the criminal complaint a deputy was sitting on Route 62 when he clocked Hawk going 85 miles per hour in this 45 zone. After Hawk crossed over into Winfield he pulled in at Speedway and that's where officers finally caught up with him. Sheriff Mark Smith says, "My officer was right in what he did. The video and the complaint speak for themselves and given this individual's past history." Steve Connolly, the prosecuting attorney in the case, says the deputy explained why he didn't have his light on when he approached. "He explained motorcycles can accelerate very quickly. He (Hawk) had already been speeding. Basically, if he had put his lights on that motorcycle wouldve been off and gone." says Connolly. Hawk plead guilty to his charges but his wife continues to make motions to lighten his one year jail sentence. So far, her efforts have been unsuccessful. "If we cant get justice here we'll have to go to federal court to seek justice." says Angela Hawk.
