Jerry Smith, Dog Owner, "We heard the gun shot, my dog dropped."
Jerry Smith says his neighbor, Carl Landers, shot his beloved boxer named Chance Sunday night. In the criminal complaint, Landers told police the dog was across the street at the time and growled at him so he went inside and grabbed his gun. Smith says Lander's wife called warning him her husband was about to shoot the dog, but he was too late. Jerry Smith, "It's infuriating." Smith says a year ago he found Chance chained up and abandoned at a vacant house. He rescued the dog from near death and that how Smith's kids came up with the boxer's name. Jerry Smith, "He had a second chance, so they named him Chance." Smith now says he will keep his other boxer Nico inside. Danny Holt isn't just concerned about the dogs in his neighborhood. Danny Holt, Neighbor, "Who's to say the next one to go won't be a kid." No one answered the door at Landers' home. St. Albans police arrested the 34-year-old for animal cruelty. Landers was a volunteer firefighter at the St. Albans fire department but resigned in the wake of the shooting. Fire Chief Steve Parsons says Landers was a good volunteer and says he doesn't want this incident to reflect poorly on the department. Chief Steve Parsons, "We can't breach that, we've worked 104 years to gain that confidence and we aren't going to so any thing to lose it." Smith says he wants some justice for what he calls a senseless act of cruelty. Jerry Smith, "He just killed this dog in cold blood."
