The Nitro levy has passed with a vote of 797 to 387.
***ORIGINAL STORY***
Four months after the Nitro levy failed to get the required 60% majority to pass, Nitro voters are back at the polls.
"I don't mind," Mildred Casebolt said. "I voted last time."
The levy was first approved in 1932, the same year the City of Nitro was incorporated. Sixty-eight years later in 2000 it failed to pass for the first time. Voters approved it one year later.
In September it failed for the second time, just seven votes shy of the 60% majority. So city leaders put it back on the ballot and stepped up advertising of the levy, from yard signs, to banners hanging above Route 25, to a giant electronic road sign.
"There is a lot more advertising," Casebolt said. "Some pro and some con."
The money from the levy makes up seven percent of the city's budget. It pays for everything from firefighters and police officers to parks and fire hydrants. It is money the city needs, one way or the other.
