The Nicholas County JROTC is on pace for an exciting 2009.
This story started last year when the group dreamed of marching in the Presidential Inaugural Parade.
Zachary Blevins, JROTC, "As a group we just wanted to try whether we succeed or not."
And succeed they did.
Sgt. Debbie Tompkins, JROTC, "When we got the phone call we were utterly amazed and we're still walking on the clouds right now."
The JROTC is the only group from the Mountain State invited to be a part of the parade.
Sgt. Debbie Tompkins, "I think the most important lesson they've learned is what happens when you try."
Performing on a national stage can be intimidating, so the 46 students like Teresa Johnson who will march in the parade really want to step it up.
Teresa Johnson, JROTC, "We're practicing marching and we're trying to get together our uniforms."
The cadets are doing everything they can to get ready but one obstacle is in the way.
Finding the funds to finance the trip.
So, they are asking for help.
Zachary Blevins, "It's history and we'd like everyone to be a part of this with us."
The trip to the nation's capitol will be a first for some.
Teresa Johnson, "I'll bring home some souvenirs for my family."
For others it will still be a moment in history they will never forget, and a story they'll be able to tell for many years to come.
Teresa Johnson, "Even though you came from a small place, you can still do big things."
If you would like to help the JROTC fund their trip call (304) 742-3065.
