VERIZON WIRELESSfrom Eyewitness News Online Helping Others with Old Phones

13 year olds Karley Rogers, Micharae Thompson, and Haeley Moore have all gotten one of the most asked for Christmas gifts, a new phone.
Micharae says, "I got a Samsung Slider for Christmas." So it's out with the old and in with the new. But what do you do with that old phone? Verizon Wireless has a solution: bring it to one of their stores. Teays Valley Verizon Wireless Manager Justin Vandevander says "We collect them and donate them to domestic violence shelters." The Hopeline program takes old cell phones and phone accessories from any carrier and gives them to those who need them the most, like the YWCA in Charleston. Haeley says, "It's good because people use them and they dont use them necessarily for 911, but to talk and text. Now women can use them for a really good cause." Karley adds, "If they ever are in trouble and if they need a phone they could always have it." The program not only helps other people, it helps protect the environment. Vandevander says, "If you got the new cell phone for Christmas and you wanna bring your phone in and drop it off at any of our stores we'll recycle it for you and get it out there in circulation." And the girls say it was the best option by far since their old phones would've done nothing but collect dust. Karley says, "It would be in my drawer." Micharae adds, "It would be at my house still. I was able to bring it here for a good cause." Remember it doesn't have to be a Verizon phone, you can drop off your donation from any carrier at any Verizon Wireless store.
